Faculty Bios

The teaching faculty at Bridges Academy consists of a core of dedicated talented and gifted professionals that have decades of combined teaching experience in every aspect of a student's academic curriculum - from small group settings to special needs to individualized one-on-one instruction. Beyond their professional and formal education, each teacher brings a distinct set of personal experiences to Bridges Academy, which invites a unique connection on a variety of levels with the student community. As unique as each teacher is here at Bridges Academy, they all share a common foundation in their dedication and passion to see each student learn to enjoy, begin to thrive, and finally succeed in their individualized academic goals.

Faculty

Bradley Bond, BS - Math and Science  PROFILE

Brad is the latest addition to the Bridges Academy faculty and teaches math and sciences. Prior to joining Bridges Academy, Brad taught for five years in the San Francisco public schools and two years at Mount Bachelor Academy. Brad has more than seven years experience teaching math and science courses at the high school level: from basic math to algebra, geometry and trigonometry and from integrated science to chemistry and AP Biology. Brad holds two B.S. degrees--one in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the other in Biomedical Sciences. Brad is a NOLS certified outdoor educator with extensive wilderness experience both in the USA and internationally. Brad is also a founding faculty member of the International Non-traditional Teaching Initiative, which merges traditional academic objectives with innovative, experiential education.

Darlene Gertsch, BA - English  PROFILE

Darlene joined Bridges Academy as the Language Arts teacher in January, 2008. She is a life-long educator, coming most recently from teaching public high school in Salt Lake City, Utah. She has been an adjunct instructor of English as a Second Language at several community colleges as well as the English Language Institute at the University of Utah. Darlene lived abroad for many years and taught English in Vienna, Austria, Tokyo, Japan, and Kamchatka, Russia; she lived on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico, where she taught Title I Language Arts at Shiprock High School. Darlene is the mother of 5 sons and feels right at home at Bridges Boys Academy – she’s just happy that she doesn’t have to do the meals or laundry! An additional interest that has kept Darlene busy over the last many years is her work with grieving children. She was instrumental in creating a non-profit organization in Utah, Camp Michael Retreat for Grieving Children, for which she served as Executive Director.

Jeff Wenger, BS - Social Sciences  PROFILE

Jeff joined Bridges Academy in February 2005 and teaches Social Sciences and upper-division elective courses. Jeff earned his Bachelor of Science in Anthropology from the University of Utah and is working toward a Master's degree in Education from Eastern Oregon University. Jeff has taught and studied in many parts of the world including Central and Southeast Asia, Europe and Alaska. He has also taught in several public school settings in Oregon. Jeff brings an extensive experiential education background to Bridges Academy. He also enjoys the custom, one-to-one instruction he and other teachers can give students. In addition to teaching, Jeff has explored many remote areas of the world as an archaeologist, climber and documentary filmmaker.
