Faculty Bios

The teaching faculty at Bridges Academy consists of a core of dedicated talented and gifted professionals that have decades of combined teaching experience in every aspect of a student's academic curriculum - from small group settings to special needs to individualized one-on-one instruction. Beyond their professional and formal education, each teacher brings a distinct set of personal experiences to Bridges Academy, which invites a unique connection on a variety of levels with the student community. As unique as each teacher is here at Bridges Academy, they all share a common foundation in their dedication and passion to see each student learn to enjoy, begin to thrive, and finally succeed in their individualized academic goals.

Faculty

Charity M. Leese, M.A. - Math and Science  PROFILE

Charity is the newest member of the Bridges Academy faculty. She teaches Math, Science, and Spanish, Careers, and various other upper division elective courses. Prior to joining Bridges Academy, Charity taught at the middle & high school level in the High Desert Educational Service District, the high school level in Eugene, OR, and the middle & high school level in Salem, OR. Charity has extensive teaching experience including: middle school math through Calculus, physical science through AP Biology & Physics, Spanish, and even Social Studies. Charity obtained her B.A. in Biology from Willamette University and her M.A. in Education from Willamette University.

Darlene Gertsch, BA - English  PROFILE

Darlene joined Bridges Academy as the Language Arts teacher in January, 2008. She is a life-long educator, coming most recently from teaching public high school in Salt Lake City, Utah. She has been an adjunct instructor of English as a Second Language at several community colleges as well as the English Language Institute at the University of Utah. Darlene lived abroad for many years and taught English in Vienna, Austria, Tokyo, Japan, and Kamchatka, Russia; she lived on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico, where she taught Title I Language Arts at Shiprock High School. Darlene is the mother of 5 sons and feels right at home at Bridges Boys Academy – she’s just happy that she doesn’t have to do the meals or laundry! An additional interest that has kept Darlene busy over the last many years is her work with grieving children. She was instrumental in creating a non-profit organization in Utah, Camp Michael Retreat for Grieving Children, for which she served as Executive Director.

Jeff Wenger, BS - Social Sciences  PROFILE

Jeff Wenger develops and teaches Social Sciences, upper-division elective courses, and the Bridges Academy Outdoor Adventure Program. He joined the Bridges team in 2005 and since 2008 has served as Bridges Academy’s Academic Director. Jeff has earned a degree in Anthropology and teaching endorsements in Oregon and Alaska. Jeff has experience in both Special Education and Honors environments and has worked in Outdoor Education as both guide and instructor. He has also taught in several public school settings. Currently he is studying toward a Masters in Humanities and School Administration. Jeff has worked in many parts of the world including Central and Southeast Asia, Europe and Alaska and brings an extensive Experiential Education background to Bridges Academy. He also enjoys the custom, one-to-one instruction he and other teachers can give students. In addition to teaching, Jeff is a guidebook author and has explored many remote areas of the world as a climber and documentary filmmaker.
