Outdoor Adventure Education
At Bridges Academy we believe that students can best accomplish their program goals in a multi-faceted, experience-based learning environment. By integrating a variety of academic and emotional growth subject matters with outdoor activities, the Bridges Academy Adventure Education Program promotes students' physical and emotional development through personal reflection and self-challenge. Additionally, the Adventure Education Program enhances the Positive Peer Environment of Bridges Academy, and helps to increase students' sense of environmental stewardship. Our Adventure Education Program includes, among others, the following activities:
- Rock Climbing
- River Rafting
- Snow Boarding/Skiing
- Day Hiking
- Backpacking
- Fishing
- Orienteering
Each activity is focused around specific, thematic learning goals. Students engage in reflective discussions and/or writing assignments, and are encouraged to explore their learning in an individualized manner. Program staff outlines specific personal, social, and academic objectives for each adventure activity. Students are required to keep field journals to document their growth and learning, and may earn academic credit for their participation in the program. All activities are facilitated by mentors trained in wilderness emergency care protocols and procedures.
