Community Service: "Making A Difference"
It is our experience that at-risk teens help themselves by making a difference in the lives of others. Our students, through a variety of community service activities, gain insight to the world around them and begin to develop empathy toward others in it. Here are just some of the community service projects that students are required to participate in:
- Students volunteer at a local homeless shelter and prepare and serve meals to those less fortunate than themselves; students also participate in a variety of activities and interact with the kids from Big Brothers/Big Sisters, where students share their stories.
- Students are involved with Sparrow Clubs USA, a national organization that raises money and provides support for families of critically ill children. For every hour of community service students perform, an outside company or individual makes a donation to be used toward medical expenses. This helps us set the stage for simple, yet heroic acts of kindness by kids helping kids in crisis.
- Students also volunteer at local cultural events and participate in "Adopt-a-Highway" roadside cleanup.
